Hear David Brambell discuss how his 30 years of experience in military and commercial operations, including the Gulf War, and the Ebola breakout in Sierra Leone, has shaped the way that he leads others through a crisis.
David explains how although emotive language such as “crisis” or “emergency” could be thought to panic people into thinking irrationally, it is important, to be honest with people, and in order for a team to respond effectively, as rapidly as possible, everyone must know the severity of the situation. Expressing confidence, and energy will encourage the people around you to trust in you and the plan to get through the presented crisis. David highlights the need for a sound plan by emphasising that “failing to plan is planning to fail”.

Monday Nov 28, 2022
Monday Nov 28, 2022
“Don’t die wondering” – the quote and value that Laura Siddall, professional triathlete, stands by to help drive her when making big decisions. How could incorporating this same value in your life impact the way you make decisions, whether they be personal, or business-related?
Laura made a big leap from using sport as a hobby alongside her corporate job, to fully committing to sport, triathlon specifically, as her profession. Laura explains how she was excited to see where her limits may be within the sport when fully committing to it. Laura shares the obstacles, personal failures, and lessons that she encountered when making this leap and has ultimately learnt to not be fearful of what the result of a decision may be and to just try because you don’t know what the outcome may be until you try.

Imagine spending 110 days swimming 900 miles along the length of the UK. Would you quit? What challenges would you encounter? What would keep you going?
Jasmine Harrison, 23-year-old, and the first woman to swim the entire length of the UK from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, shares her inspirational experience of her incredible and challenging adventure. Jasmine discusses the low points, how she dealt with them, and what she learnt about dealing with challenges.
Only two people had previously swum from Land's End to John o'Groats: Ross Edgley, who in 2018 was the first and fastest Briton to complete the swim in 61 days, and Sean Conway, who accomplished the feat in 2013.
Not unfamiliar with epic events Jasmine is also the youngest woman to row solo across the Atlantic. On December 12, 2020, after 70 days at sea, she crossed the finish line of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.
When reflecting on the main challenges she encountered, Jasmine highlights the importance of having a team that is all aligned to the same purpose and goal, and how communicating openly and honestly with your team members is vital in order to unite your team.

Hear Chico Chakravorty, founder and managing consultant of Doing Diversity Differently, discuss how organisations can enhance their diversity, inclusion and belonging culture.
Chico explains how organisations can integrate genuine behavioural changes within diversity and inclusion by understanding that it will be a continual journey of learning, and by taking accountability for this learning by questioning how to bridge certain gaps in the knowledge. Chico says how we will often learn from making mistakes, and rather than panicking and brushing off mistakes made, it’s important to acknowledge them and learn how we can move away from these mistakes in the future.
Having a diverse team, with people from different ethnic origins, different genders, and different cognitive abilities can lead to greater success in organisations.

Extreme athlete Claire Smith discusses her incredible achievements, including being the first British person to complete a Double Deca Ironman. Claire explains how with every success there are challenges to overcome, and that the same applies within a business.
Claire emphasises the importance of breaking down what feels impossible, to show that it can be possible. Visualising the process of breaking down the “impossible”, as well as visualising things that could go wrong along the way, prepares you well for the challenges ahead. Applying this same process to business challenges, as well as keeping a positive mindset, can help improve our resilience and thus lead to greater achievements.

#117 Lori Mihalich-Levin | How to navigate parenthood in the workplace
Monday Oct 24, 2022
Monday Oct 24, 2022
Are you a working parent? Struggling with confidence after returning to work? Lori Mihalich-Levin, founder and CEO of mindful return and author of the book “Back to work after baby”, highlights the additional, career-critical skills that we acquire through parenthood, and how these skills can make us better leaders.
Lori discusses the importance of employers not making assumptions about what a person may feel capable of once they have returned to work, as well as normalising conversations about how one may be feeling. Moreover, offering parental leave in a gender-neutral way helps to emphasise the humanity of taking parental leave.
Returning to work after parental leave is a long transition period, with many challenges along the way, and Lori provides excellent guidance on ways to personally face these challenges, as well as ways that employers can help working parents thrive.
