Spencer Gallagher, agency founder and author, is dedicated to supporting independent agencies and founders to scale up their agencies. Today, Spencer explores culture, with a focus on flat organisational structure and resistance to change. Spencer discusses the unquestionable importance of culture in a business, however, addresses the challenges that come with retaining culture once the business scales up, and the potential dangers of falling into a hierarchical structure. To shift to a flat organisational structure, intrinsic motivation from your team is essential, and Spencer provides advice on how to create and maintain this intrinsic motivation, as well as how to recruit accordingly. With any change to structure comes doubts and concerns, and Spencer addresses the obstacles that may get in the way. However, without a doubt, Spencer passionately advocates for the success of shifting to a flatter organisational structure, with enormous benefits observed from all angles.

Today, Sally Tabbner, CEO of Dementia Support, explores dementia in the workplace.
Sally places great emphasis on the indisputable importance of ensuring people truly understand what dementia is, but also what it is not. With a greater understanding of dementia, support can be provided to help with the challenges that those living with dementia and continuing to work, face daily. By employing transparent and open dialogue, discussions can be held regarding adjustment to the working role, as well as providing a secure environment for news of a diagnosis to be shared openly.

From asking hundreds of questions a day as a child, to drastically less as an adult, we all become less curious as we get older. So, what is the benefit of creating a culture of curiosity in an organisation? Today, Josh Purvis, co-founder and chief product officer at Assembly, explores curiosity, listening to real problems and how to express counter-opinions effectively.
Josh emphasises the importance of not only incentivising or promoting the wins but also the losses. Punishing losses will diminish the ability of people to experiment and be curious. Leading in this way limits innovation, creates fear-led leadership and ultimately results in more losses. Increasing the rate at which you experiment can help create a culture of curiosity.

Melissa Dinwiddie is an advocate for teaching people to turn on their creative taps and today will explore ways that we can unlock improvisation and creativity in order to benefit an organisation.
Melissa highlights how a major part of improvisation is working to make your partner look good and thus discusses the powerful impact that this can have when applied to a business team. Melissa further emphasises the importance of listening with awareness, as well as the power of play. Designing your business to be more playful not only promotes learning and creativity, but restores energy back to your brain, ultimately demonstrating the high effectiveness of adopting these creative approaches into your business.

How can we create an organisational culture that contributes to creativity and innovation?
Hear Jason Foo, founder, chairman and CEO of BBD Perfect Storm, explore how we can achieve this.
Jason firstly emphasises the importance of clearly articulating the organisation’s purpose, or “north star” as he calls it. Ensuring that the organisation acts and works in support of its purpose is the core to creativity and innovation. Creativity and innovation can further be generated by employing people who match and radiate the organisation’s energy. A culture of creativity and innovation can be achieved by ensuring that your organisation's values and behaviours reflect its authentic nature but are also projective to encourage growth.

What parallels are there between sport and business, and what can we learn from them?
Laura Siddall returns to Helping Organisations Thrive to discuss what parallels she has experienced throughout her life in both corporate positions and now as a professional athlete. Laura highlights how there is a focus on rest, recovery, sleep and nutrition in sport, as these are factors widely known to sustainably improve performance. Although these “tools" have the potential to be highly transferable in enhancing performance in a corporate setting, prioritisation of these aspects is limited. Laura goes on to discuss various other parallels she has found, and what we can learn from them, from receiving feedback on a regular basis, to ensuring a common goal resonates throughout a team.

How can leaders create a culture of continuous improvement?
Dave Crysler, principal consultant of the Crysler Club, discusses what continuous improvement is, the importance of it, and how leaders can create it within their company culture.
Dave shares how the value that continuous improvement adds to companies is vast, however, companies must constantly acknowledge this value and tackle operational inefficiencies continually, and not just when sales, for example, start to slow. Creating a culture of continuous improvement will make people feel valued and listened to, thus resulting in improved performance.
Dave goes on to highlight some strategies that leaders can implement into their everyday routines that will encourage a culture of continuous improvement, including insights on how to “operate with excellence”.

48 marathons, in 48 days, in 48 of England’s counties. John Clark, also two times winner of Britain’s Natural Strongest Man, shares the lessons he has learned about resilience throughout his 48-day marathon challenge.
John highlights how resilience is not always just about having a “get up and go” attitude but also about learning, and recognising the things that are controllable, and the things that are not.
Facing many obstacles throughout the 48 marathons, including injuries, fainting, fatigue, and moments of doubt, John emphasises how easy and justifiable it would have been to give up and stop. However, his resilient mindset urged him to find a strategy to prevent these challenges from occurring again, rather than finding a reason to stop. By focusing on only trying to control the controllable, John truly demonstrates what resilience is.
